The driving tests

This page gives brief information about the UK driving tests.

Mock Driving tests
Where appropriate mock tests are given during your practical learning to determine a pupils readiness for the DSA approved test.

Eyesight requirements for the practical driving test

If you need glasses or contact lenses to meet the requirements you must make sure you wear them every time you drive.

Before the practical driving test, your driving examiner will ask you to read the number plate on a stationary vehicle.
The distance requirement for the old-style number plate is 20.5 metres. The distance requirement for the new-style number plate is 20 metres.
If you can read the number plate correctly you will be allowed to proceed with your driving test.

Theory test

The Theory Test is made up of two parts:

Theory Test Part 1:
This is Computer based which consists of 50 multiple choice questions which have to be answered in 57 minutes.  You must get 43 correct answers to pass this part of the theory test.

Theory Test Part 2:
The second part of the theory test is the hazard perception which consists of fourteen video clips shown on the computer screen with 15 hazards in all, so one of the clips will have two hazards that you will be scored on.  The way this test is scored is the faster that you react to the hazards on screen and click the mouse, the higher score you will receive. The clips are scored from five to zero depending how quickly you react. to pass this test you need to score 44 out of 75.

You will have to pass both parts of the theory test at the same sitting, otherwise you will have to take the test again.  Please note the theory test has to be passed before you can apply for your practical driving test so it makes sense to get your theory test passed as soon as you can.  Once you have passed it - it is valid for two years.

Practical test

The driving test consists of a drive of approximately forty minutes where you could be tested on open roads, town roads dual carriageways and country lanes.  You will also be asked to complete two manoeuvres which could be any two of the following:

Turn in the road(or 3 point turn as it is sometimes called)
Reverse left into a side road.
Reverse left or right into a parking bay.
Parallel park at the curb behind a parked car.

Another exercise you may be asked to carry out is the controlled stop (or emergency stop as it is sometimes known).

The way that this test is marked is when you start the test you have a clean marking sheet(a perfect driver as it were)and as you drive through your test your examiner will mark down any faults in your driving. The faults could be marked as a ‘driving fault‘, ‘a serious fault’,  or a ‘dangerous fault‘.  You are allowed up to 15 driving faults before a fail is recorded but any serious or dangerous faults automatically means a fail.

The test Centres in which Carl will access are Workington and Kendal.
